History of the canal house .
In 1870 it was the site where now Amstel Corner is now housed a large water, where the Amstel river town came. The inner harbor was called Amstel haven.
Subsequently , the municipality decided to reclaim that water. The entire block of Sarphatikade is then drained . The municipality has reclaimed land plots sold to landowners .
Mr Geert de Winter was one of the land owners and architect , and in January 1880 construction drawing of mayor and aldermen of submitted plans to build Sarphatikade . 15 and 16, the city of Amsterdam Geert de Winter also has also designed seven other buildings including the Icebreaker bar.
On May 14, 1880 , he purchased the land , the land of the Dutch Construction Company , under the conditions that are in the garden of 16 Sarphatikade capital back home will be built .
On March 2, 1882 Geert sold Winter Leonard Bernard van Tienen (son of Lena Magaretha Thaarup , 1794 ) the house , yard and garden to the rear to decline by 16 Sarphatikade East End for an amount of NLG 20,000.00 guilders as being new .
